Volcanic ash and dust fell across Ust-Kamchatsk in the east of the Kamchatka Peninsula after the eruption of the Bezymaynny volcano on March 9, the geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
Ust-Kamchatsk, where around 4,700 people reside is located 125 kilometers northeast of the volcano.
The active phase of the Bezymaynny volcano was not very long. During a short period of time it ejected ash to the height of 8 kilometers above sea level. The ash cloud moved 521 kilometers eastward from the volcano. At present, the volcano’s active phase subsided.
Bezymyanny is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It is located in the central part of the Klyuchevskaya volcano group 350 kilometers northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Its eruptions are explosive and last from several hours to several days.
Since 1965, scientists have observed 41 strong explosive eruptions of this volcano. Since 1993 scientists have been monitoring the volcano daily.
