Rare whale spotted near the Komandorskie Islands
The Komandorskie Islands are located near the Kamchatka peninsula. They are part of Kamchatka region. The distance from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by air is 775 km. The territory is 1500 square kilometers.  The population (677 people) lives in Nikolskoe village of Bering Island.

Recently, a gray whale could be seen from the windows of Nikolskoe village. Gray whales are included in Red Book of Russia and are the rarest whales in this part of the Pacific Ocean.

Gray whales make one of the longest migrations - more than 20 thousand kilometers between breeding and feeding grounds from California (USA) to Kamchatka, Chukotka and Sakhalin.
